I'm a Chiefs fan, so watching the Carolina Panthers used to mean jack shit to me. But if I get Cam Newton on my team, I'm suddenly invested in that game. I want to watch Cam and root for him to earn me lots of points.

While I am a fan of the football in general, I am primarily a fan of the Chicago Bears. But, with fantasy football I have players from many teams on my team. I wouldn't normally watch their teams play, but now find them much more interesting because I have something to look out for.

It gives appeal to garbage games. If you live in a non-NFL area the games you get on TV can have no interest or appeal (if it's not your favorite team playing). Fantasy at least gives you a rooting interest in games like that and make it interesting. There is also the appeal of trash-talking friends of they're in the same league. It's also it's a good way to keep in touch with people, as people get older you tend to drift apart from people and in my case we still play fantasy football so at least a few times a year I interact with folks I would have lost touch with otherwise. Also gambling.

I always get envious when I hear stories here about people who have played Fantasy Football with a group of close friends for years. I want to be in those leagues where people trash talk often, have outrageous loser punishments, trades and waiver wire pick ups happen often and more.

Ok, so Fantasy Football is a way for adult men to pretend they are the superheroes of their adult lives. They choose individual hulking man beasts and root for their individual success. There are points assigned for certain heroic actions. Score a touchdown, get six points. Stop a bullet, get 10 points. Throw an interception, lose 2 points. Trapped by a fiendish plot loosed by your arch nemesis, lose a power amulet. And so on.

It's a decent guide to getting started. Berry gets a lot of heat as a "fantasy football expert" but his stuff is decent for starters.

this is what I'd recommend as well, pre draft they break down teams by division, they do top 20 rankings, they discuss basics of fantasy strategy and terminology, definitely a crash course that will get the average person ready to be somewhat competitive.

I like the seahawks and agreed to play fantasy last season. I had watched football but only hawks and only knew hawks players and a few bigger names. Don't overthink it. Use expert rankings, but make sure they actually keep their rankings updated during the season. The FantasyPros site has a bunch of guys who stop updating halfway through, so their rankings will take several weeks to catch up-- eg, players out on IR will still be in the top 20 for a few weeks. But here again, you don't need to know anything about football to sort through which "experts" are paying attention and which aren't.

Id say first off dont look at it as some black hole where you are exhausting your time. Wake up early sunday and set your lineups. Watch football if you want, but costamtly updating the app wont chamge your scoring. You have all of the fantasy apps, so youll get notified on pretty much all actionable information.

I'm in league made of Irish/Brits/Australians if you're interested in joining and everyone is active. Don't bother joining a random free league online cause half the people will go inactive half way through. Do mockdrafts and search draft strategies based on the league format

if your just playing with a BS work league or something like that then you probably have the same chance of winning as everyone else just for that fact that no one ever knows whos gonna get injured, do drugs, or beat up their wife/kids and you never know what under rated player is gonna turn into an arian foster or aaron rodgers.

The point about luck is a great one. People are always complaining about the influence of luck in games and trying to remove it, but fantasy football (and games in general) really isn’t that fun if the best player wins every time. IMO you want a set of rules where anyone who puts in reasonable effort has a chance to win. What constitutes reasonable effort level will vary by league.

I give you a lot of props being in a 16 team league. I usually am in 14 team ones and those are hard enough. I played in a few 16s middle of the decade and they are obscene. Then again most people on this sub don't know you can play with more than 12 teams.
